Biology Tells

Structural patterns in how NSB Biology questions are written — not biology facts, but tells that let you narrow or guess an answer from wording alone.

Universal patterns

These hold across every Biology subtopic. Learn these eight and you can pattern-match a large share of questions without knowing the underlying content.

1. "Which is NOT true / EXCEPT / LEAST accurate"

These questions flip the usual logic: instead of picking the correct statement, you're picking the false one out of four. The most common mistake is answering with whichever choice sounds most correct — that's exactly backwards here. Three choices are true facts; only one is wrong, and that wrong one is the answer.

Before you commit, always confirm which direction the question is asking — "NOT," "EXCEPT," and "LEAST accurate" are the words to listen for. This single pattern shows up in roughly a fifth to a quarter of all multiple-choice questions, so it's worth having reflexive.

2. Absolute language is usually the trap

Inside a "NOT true" question, scan the four choices for words like always, never, all, only, or none. Real biology is full of exceptions, so a choice that makes a sweeping, no-exceptions claim is disproportionately likely to be the false one you're looking for — especially when the other three choices hedge with softer words like "typically," "usually," or "can."

"Free radicals are not known to play a role in biological processes" — the absolute negative claim stands out and is the false statement.

3. A reversed direction is often the answer

When three answer choices agree on a direction — all say "increase," all describe daytime behavior, all point one way on a 5′-to-3′ sequence — and one choice flips that direction, the flipped one is usually the false statement in a "NOT true" question. You don't need to know the specific fact; you just need to notice that one choice doesn't match the pattern of the other three.

4. Listen for "common name" vs. "scientific/technical term"

The adjective in the question tells you what kind of word to search your memory for, before you've even finished parsing the rest of the sentence. "What is the common name for..." wants a plain-English, everyday word. "What is the scientific, technical, or medical term for..." wants the Latin/Greek jargon word instead.

5. A named scientist locks in one fixed answer

When a question names a historical scientist or a classic experiment, there is no ambiguity to reason through — that experiment is associated with exactly one textbook fact, and the question is just testing whether you recognize the name. You don't need to understand the science; you just need to have the name-to-fact pairing memorized.

6. Decode Greek/Latin word roots

Many Short Answer and Multiple Choice answers are built from recognizable roots, so even if you don't know the specific term, you can often work out its shape. -ase at the end of a word means it's an enzyme, and enzyme names usually describe what they physically do. -osis or -esis means a process. poly- means many, mono- means one, homo- means same, hetero- means different.

A question describes something that "seals a nick in the DNA backbone" → the enzyme's name is ligase (from "to bind/tie"), decoded from the verb alone.

7. "Identify/name all of the following that..." is a format, not a fact

This exact phrasing is almost always a Bonus question, worth more points, with more time to answer. As soon as you hear it, you know two things regardless of the topic: the answer is a subset of whatever list was just read, and — contrary to instinct — "ALL of them" or "NONE of them" is the actual answer far more often than you'd expect from a random guess. Don't assume it has to split down the middle.

8. A pronunciation guide flags vocabulary, not the answer

When a question includes something like "(read as: fah-GOH-sy-TOH-sis)", that's purely there to help the reader say a hard word out loud correctly. It shows up on wrong answer choices just as often as on right ones. Don't treat "this choice has a phonetic spelling" as a signal that it's correct — it only tells you the vocabulary is hard, not which option to pick.

Letter odds

Exact tally across all 1,032 Biology multiple-choice questions in the sample sets. Only reach for this if you are completely out of ideas and the clock is about to run out — the lean is real but mild, nowhere near strong enough to bet on over an actual read of the question.
