Structural patterns in how NSB Energy questions are written — not the science itself, but tells that let you narrow or guess an answer from wording alone.

Universal patterns

These hold across nuclear, renewables, grid policy, biofuels, and materials science alike.

1. "Which of the following is NOT / is not true / EXCEPT"

By far the single most common structural pattern in Energy — three choices are correct facts, one is wrong, and that wrong one is the answer. It shows up in roughly a quarter to a third of all Multiple Choice questions, spanning every subtopic. Once you notice the inverted logic, this becomes mechanically reliable.

"Biodiesel generally outperforms regular petro diesel in all of the following categories, EXCEPT:" → the one category where it actually doesn't.

2. Absolute or oddly precise wording is usually the trap

Inside a "NOT true" question, scan for a choice using sweeping, no-exceptions language — "always," "never," or a suspiciously precise round number stated as plain fact. Real systems almost always have exceptions, so the absolute-sounding claim is disproportionately the false one.

"It is 99.7% reliable" — oddly precise, stated flatly as fact — was the false claim about the US power grid.

3. A named scientist, inventor, or law locks in one fixed answer

When a question names a historical figure or a classic law or equation, there's no reasoning required — that name is paired with exactly one textbook fact, so recognizing the name is the whole task.

"Whose equation describes the relationship between concentration and electric potential?" → Nernst  |  credited with defining "horsepower" → James Watt.

4. Long, jargon-heavy questions often define their own answer

Energy questions frequently open with an elaborate scenario ("DOE scientists at [lab] are studying X..."). The more technical and drawn-out the setup, the more likely the final clause is secretly just defining the term being asked for — you don't need outside knowledge, just to notice the definition is right there in the question.

"...quasiparticles that carry vibrational energy in the lattice?" → Phonon — a phonon is, by definition, a vibrational-energy quasiparticle.

5. A "NOT true" false choice often reverses or mismatches a pair

When a comparison-style "NOT true" question weighs two related things against each other, the false statement frequently swaps them — attributing one concept's real property to a similar-sounding one, or reversing a direction the other choices share.

6. Pronunciation guides flag hard vocabulary, never the answer

Bracketed phonetic spellings like "(read as: bi-TUH-mi-nehs)" appear on wrong choices just as often as right ones. They exist purely so the reader can say the word aloud — not to hint at which choice is correct.

"Subbituminous / Bituminous / Lignite / Peat" — all four coal types phonetically spelled in the same question; only one (Bituminous) is correct.

7. "Identify all of the following that are true/false" is a fixed bonus format

This exact phrasing is a Short Answer bonus template, not a fact question. The answer is always a specific numbered subset — recognizing the format tells you the answer shape instantly regardless of subject matter, and "ALL OF THEM" is a real, non-rare answer.

"Identify all of the following three statements that are true regarding biofuels" → ALL OF THEM.

8. When guessing a wide numeric range blind, avoid the extremes

Many Energy questions offer four numeric choices spanning huge ranges (100,000 / 1 million / 10 million / 100 million) or wide even multiples. With zero basis to calculate or recall the real figure, the correct answer is more often one of the two moderate inner choices than the smallest or largest extreme — a weak lean, not a rule, and real counterexamples exist.
