Structural patterns in how NSB Earth & Space questions are written — not the science itself, but tells that let you narrow or guess an answer from wording alone.

Universal patterns

These hold across astronomy, geology, meteorology, and oceanography alike.

1. "NOT true / NOT accurate / LEAST accurate / EXCEPT" is the dominant shape

This inverted-logic format is everywhere across every sub-area — three choices are real facts, one is false, and the false one is the answer. It appears in roughly a quarter to a third of all Multiple Choice questions, the single most common template found. Always confirm which direction the question wants before committing.

"Which of the following is NOT true of what occurs during an equinox" → the false claim that "the Moon is directly overhead at the poles" is the answer.

2. Look for a reversed relationship or comparison

When the false statement in a "NOT true" question compares two things — two structures, two locations, two directions — it's very often a real fact with the relationship flipped, rather than an invented lie. Scan for a choice that pairs two real concepts in a way that sounds plausible but is actually backwards.

"The geothermal gradient beneath continental crust is less steep than under oceanic crust" — false; the real relationship is reversed.

3. A named scientist, mission, or instrument locks in one fixed fact

When a question names a specific historical scientist, space mission, or instrument, there's no science reasoning required — that name is paired with exactly one textbook fact. Recognize the name, recall the fact.

Alfred Wegener → always continental drift (never plate tectonics itself)  |  WMAP → mapping the cosmic background radiation.

4. "Identify all that..." and "arrange/order the following..." are structural tells

This exact phrasing signals the answer format regardless of topic: either a subset of a list or a full ordered sequence. "ALL" and "NONE" come up as real answers more often than a random guess would suggest — don't assume the list has to split down the middle.

"Name all of the following 4 factors that are reasons why biomes are not homogeneous..." → ALL.

5. "BEST describes / BEST explains / MOST directly" rewards the specific, mechanistic choice

When a question asks for the "BEST" explanation among several plausible-sounding options, the correct choice usually names a precise, specific mechanism, while the wrong choices are vaguer or invoke an unrelated but real-sounding process.

"BEST explanation for zodiacal light" → "Sunlight reflected off interplanetary dust particles" beats vaguer options like reflected moonlight.

6. Pronunciation guides flag hard vocabulary, not the answer

Bracketed phonetic spellings like "(read as: SPY-kah)" exist purely to help the reader pronounce a term correctly out loud. They land on wrong choices just as often as right ones and should never be treated as a signal for which option is correct.

A question glosses "Spica (read as: SPY-kah)" in the stem itself — unrelated to which answer choice is correct.

7. Absolute, sweeping claims are disproportionately the false statement

In "NOT true" or "TRUE" framed questions, a choice making a sweeping, no-exceptions claim (using words like "only" or "always," or asserting one single cause is responsible) is more likely to be the outlier than choices phrased with normal, qualified language.

"Continental shelves generally overlay oceanic crust" is false — shelves are actually part of continental crust, and the claim quietly asserts something absolute-sounding about their nature.

8. "Common name" vs. "scientific/proper term" still applies

When a question explicitly asks for the "common name" or "most well-known" term, it wants the plain, everyday name rather than a technical designation; when it asks for the formal or proper name, expect the more official term instead. Shows up less often here than in Biology, but reliable when it appears.

"Most well-known asterism in Ursa Major?" → Big Dipper, the common name, not a catalog designation.
